Hello, and welcome to Pedagogy Is King, a new blog by Leah Kurtz, Ed.S., with (I hope) LOTS of guest contributors. I am a Technology Training/Integration Specialist for a school district north of Atlanta, Georgia, USA. My background is high school Social Studies including AP courses, small group ESOL courses, and everything in between.
I began my teaching career in Fall 2006 at a Title I high school. When I first started teaching, I thought that technology would be a distraction to my students; however, after fighting it for several years, I began to realize that I was spinning my wheels. My students used technology. I could either embrace it or be left behind. Thus began my odyssey of exploration and transformation using technology.
Fast forward… These days, I am assigned to two high schools. I spend my time researching new technologies and best practices for incorporating those technologies into the classroom. I LOVE technology – more than I love cake. BUT what I have come to realize over the past two years is that many people assume that because I love technology, I must love it at any cost. David Geurin wrote, “Classrooms don’t need tech geeks who can teach, we need teaching geeks who can use tech.” This is so true – a worksheet made digital is still a worksheet.
This led me to coin the phrase “Pedagogy Is King,” and I occasionally utilize it as a hashtag on Twitter as well. An amazing Digital Transformation Coach in our county, Nadia Williams, said, “This should be a blog, or a book, or…”
Welcome to the journey, friends. My hope and prayer is that you will find some inspiration and encouragement here to press forward on your teaching journey!
